Slough is a compact borough with a lot packed into it: the town centre and the station on the Great Western line, the trading estate to the west, and Chalvey, Cippenham, Langley, Britwell, Manor Park and Upton around them. Heathrow is minutes away and shapes a great deal of local employment.

Slough Daily reports what the borough’s own record shows. Slough Borough Council has been a unitary authority since 1998, so planning, bins, roads, licensing, council tax and schools all sit with the same body, and its finances have been a standing local story since it issued a section 114 notice in 2021. All of that is documented in papers that are published and rarely read. We read them and write down what they say, with a link to the original on every fact.

The essentials

  • Slough house prices: the middle home sold for £390,000, and prices fell 4.4% over the year, the steepest drop of any neighbouring council.
  • Trains to London: 18 minutes to Paddington on a fast service, 31 on the Elizabeth line, with the fares and station parking.
  • Roadworks and travel: the Three Tuns junction is on temporary lights for six months, and what the car parks cost.
  • Things to do: £2 leisure sessions until 31 August, plus The Curve, Herschel Park and Black Park.
  • Planning news: the borough needs 824 homes a year and builds about half, and the new Local Plan is open for comment until 24 August.
