The borough
Slough town centre, Upton, Chalvey, Cippenham, Britwell, Manor Park, Wexham and Langley, with the trading estate on the western side and the Great Western main line and Elizabeth line services running through. It is one of the more densely populated and most diverse boroughs outside London, with about 169,000 residents in a small area, and its economy is tied closely to the estate and to Heathrow.
Why the council’s paperwork matters here
Slough has been a unitary authority since 1998, so there is no county council in the middle: planning, waste, highways, licensing, council tax, schools and social care are all its responsibility. The council’s financial position has been a continuing subject of public scrutiny since it issued a section 114 notice in 2021, and the consequences of that turn up in budget papers, asset disposals and service decisions. We report what those documents say, with the source linked, rather than characterising the situation ourselves.
What we work from
The council’s planning register and committee papers, budget and audit reports, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Thames and local watercourses, and company filings in The Gazette. Where a record is unclear we say it is unclear rather than filling the gap.
